THEO WOLVECAMP
AMBASSADE ART GALLERY
A SPECIAL SALES EXHIBITION
From Monday, May 15, 2023 to
Sunday, June 23, 2023.
A special sales exhibition of works on paper by Theo Wolvecamp from the collection of the Ambassade Hotel.
Theo Wolvecamp (1925-1992) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist who was part of the CoBrA movement.
Artists mainly from Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands formed the international avant-garde movement CoBrA from 1948 to 1951. (CoBrA is an acronym of the capitals where the founders came from: Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam).
The artists wanted to work in a free and spontaneous way; pure, intuitive, uninhibited and free of academic rules.
Theo Wolvecamp was not as prominent as other CoBrA artists such as Karel Appel and Corneille but he was greatly admired by his fellow artists. Theo Wolvecamp is also called the “silent force of CoBrA” and his work is the common thread in the CoBrA collection of the Ambassade Hotel.
The Ambassade Art Gallery is open from Monday to Friday between 13.00 – 17.00h. Please book a time slot via the button below (free of charge). There is no need to register for the opening event on January 27th.

SIDNEY WAERTS (1976)
EXHIBITION DATES
4 November – 10 January
OPENING EVENT
4 NOVEMBER | 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM | No rsvp needed
The Ambassade Hotel and gallery curator Chinny Bond invite you to “FALL”, an exhibition of works by Sidney Waerts (SIT).
« The work of Dutch artist SIT is inevitably characterized by a feeling of discomfort: his paintings and sculptures show the moment when beauty loses its raison d’être, and presents its darkest side. Behind his figurative images lies a disturbing analysis of our times.
SIT demonstrates artificial characters, human beings and animals that remind us of the banality of everyday life, of our obsession with appearance, look and materia-lism. These characters are the victims of our visual and fast society, the technology of the visible – where human vanity stands in the way of a truly ethical life. By using black and white, SIT creates sober and melancholic images, as if man – while endlessly believing in progression – has lost something on the way. But on the other hand he displays a maximum of effects: the rough textures and fast strokes look dramatic and seductive, the settings are theatrical and grotesque.
This ambiguity – between the temptation of beauty and our constant urge to abuse her – is the driving force behind SIT’s work. »

Hyland Mather
20 May – 25 July
The Ambassade Hotel and art gallery curator Chinny Bond invite you to “IN THE DISTANCE”, an exhibition of works by Hyland Mather.
“Primarily in my work I’m interested in balance. Aesthetic balance, conceptual balance, physical balance. Like many other artists I have several ongoing bodies of work. I am an assemblage artist working on my ‘Lost Object’ and ‘Modus Volito’ series of sculptures and installations created from reclaimed or ‘lost’ materials.
I am also a painter of geometric abstract works, currently creating ‘Linea Pictura’ paintings which incorporate stretched taut string over canvas. As a muralist, I have several ongoing bodies of work including my text based ‘Emblematum’ series which also appear as collage works, and ‘Acervos’ paintings which are stacked geometry paintings.”

EUGÈNE BRANDS
9 April – 30 April
The Ambassade Hotel and Eugénie Brands invite you for the exhibition of a large selection of gouaches by Eugène Brands.
“A painting has to come into being. I don’t create it. I am an antenna. The form is not predetermined or contemplated. I begin by painting thin areas of color or observing what is happening with the paint and then I act on that. The creation of a painting is an almost autonomous event. It requires a medium. That is the painter.”
