This month, we’re excited to feature Joey, one of our recent additions to the team. Learn more about Joey’s background, what he loves most about working at the Ambassade, and his favorite local spots in Amsterdam.
“Since mid-March, I have been working at the Ambassade Hotel as a Front Office employee. In my opinion, the most important tasks within this role are to make guests feel welcome and acknowledged upon arrival, to be an approachable and consistent point of contact for questions or requests during their stay, and to ensure a pleasant and memorable experience when they check out.
I am originally from Apeldoorn, just an hour’s journey from Amsterdam. In Apeldoorn, I also pursued my Hotel Management studies. I specifically chose the English-language program to easily connect with international students and learn more about different cultures. When I completed my graduation project in Amsterdam, I knew for sure that Amsterdam was the city for me. The city’s diversity and vibrancy attract me enormously. Naturally, I wanted to start my career in Amsterdam after my studies. When I walked into the Ambassade Hotel to hand in my CV, it just felt right. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was professional—exactly what I was looking for. Personally, I love delving into topics and expanding my knowledge, whether by reading books, watching documentaries, or engaging in conversations with others. I also enjoy forming deeper connections with people by actively listening and later revisiting what they have shared with me. This way, I know others feel heard, and the conversation becomes much more personal.
This personal touch is exactly what I appreciate about working at the Ambassade Hotel. There is a wonderful way of communicating with personal attention. It makes you feel more connected with your colleagues, leading to enjoyable interactions. I also feel that guests can sense this and greatly appreciate it. The connection between different departments is also excellent. We work together easily and try to learn from each other. Recently, I followed a cross-training at Koan Float, our Wellness Centre, and experienced floating for the first time. It was great to learn more about how our colleagues work there, and I really enjoyed the floating session. I’ve heard colleagues say that one hour of floating is equivalent to four hours of sleep, and after last week, I completely agree.
A few of my favorite spots to eat or drink in the city are “Proeflokaal van Wees,” right around the corner from our hotel, where you can enjoy a good drink; “Cafe Piazza,” a cozy little Italian restaurant at the Nieuwmarkt; and “Hannekes Boom,” a very colorful and atmospheric terrace near Amsterdam Central where you can enjoy the best craft beers in the sunshine. One unique experience that is not to be missed in Amsterdam is taking a boat tour through the canals. In just 1 to 2 hours, you can learn so much about the city’s history in a very fun and original way. Additionally, I highly recommend taking the ferry across the IJ, which is fun in itself, and viewing the city from above at the Amsterdam Lookout. Especially in the evening, with all the city lights, the view is truly breathtaking.”
