Head of Maintenance / Facilities Manager

Vacancy: Head of Maintenance / Facilities Manager

The Ambassade Hotel is spread across a collection of distinctive historic canal houses in the heart of Amsterdam. While beautiful and full of character, these buildings also present unique technical challenges. Maintenance takes place within a luxury hotel environment that operates seven days a week, requiring expertise, oversight, and above all, careful planning.

We are seeking a Head of Maintenance who will be responsible for the day-to-day technical management of the Ambassade Hotel, ensuring that our buildings and installations remain safe, reliable, and well maintained.

Objective

As the head in our Maintenance team, you’ll assist guests and colleagues with any technical support they require. You’ll also work with the team to ensure ongoing maintenance of our systems, buildings, and rooms. Furthermore, you’ll work with the maintenance team to maintain safety in and around the hotel, including working conditions. You’ll also serve as a point of contact for colleagues in other departments and participate in overarching meetings when requested.

Daily tasks

  • leading, coaching, and supporting the maintenance team.
  • planning, allocating, and monitoring daily maintenance activities.
  • coordinating and resolving technical faults and breakdowns.
  • organising and overseeing preventative maintenance programmes.
  • managing the upkeep of building systems, guest rooms, and public areas.
  • supervising minor renovations, maintenance works, and technical projects.
  • engaging and managing external contractors, engineers, and specialist suppliers.
  • requesting, reviewing, and evaluating quotations.
  • monitoring maintenance budgets, costs, and material usage.
  • ensuring compliance with statutory inspections, regulations, and safety standards.
  • identifying recurring technical issues and implementing long-term solutions.
  • maintaining technical records, maintenance schedules, and documentation of completed works.

Teamwork and collaboration

You are a visible presence on the floor, with a clear understanding of operational priorities and technical requirements. Together with your team, you assess priorities and determine the most effective course of action.

While unexpected breakdowns are part of hotel operations, your focus is on reducing disruptions through proactive maintenance, planning and continuous improvement.

Qualifications and skills

We are looking for a technically strong, hands-on professional who takes ownership and maintains oversight in a dynamic environment. You do not need to perform every specialist task yourself, but you should possess sufficient technical expertise to assess situations accurately, determine what can be handled internally, and recognise when external specialists should be engaged.

In addition, you understand the unique demands of working within a luxury hospitality environment. Technical solutions must not only be effective but also implemented with minimal disruption to guests and colleagues.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • experience within technical services, facilities management, property maintenance, or building management.
  • previous experience leading or coordinating maintenance personnel.
  • broad technical knowledge of buildings and building-related installations.
  • experience with preventative maintenance programmes.
  • knowledge of relevant safety regulations, inspections, and compliance requirements.
  • experience managing suppliers, contractors and service providers.
  • a practical, proactive, and independent approach to work.
  • strong communication and organisational skills.
  • the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • experience within hotels, hospitality venues, historic properties, or other heavily utilised buildings is considered a strong advantage.

Working conditions

  • The position requires flexibility in working days and hours, including weekends and holidays, depending on the needs of the operation.
  • Be prepared for physical work that involves standing, moving, and walking around for a full 8 hour shift.
  • You will work throughout the hotel, including guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house facilities, and technical spaces.

Your challenge

The Ambassade Hotel consists of a collection of historic canal houses where hundreds of guests and employees live, work, and visit every day. The technical infrastructure simply needs to perform reliably at all times.

At the same time, we are focused on further professionalising our maintenance department. The objective is to move away from reactive maintenance and towards a more strategic, preventative approach: identifying recurring issues, improving maintenance planning, documenting activities more effectively, and preventing small technical concerns from developing into major operational problems.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with management to implement improvements, optimise processes, and further develop the maintenance department into a proactive and highly effective operation.
